Frequently Asked Questions

  • An IBCLC, or International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, is a healthcare professional who specializes in the clinical management of breastfeeding and human lactation. This certification is recognized globally as the gold standard in lactation support and signifies that the consultant has completed rigorous training, passed a comprehensive examination, and adheres to a strict code of ethics.

The IBCLC distinction matters because it ensures that the consultant possesses extensive knowledge and skills to address a wide range of breastfeeding challenges. The IBCLC credential is grounded in evidence-based practice and ongoing education, which equips professionals to provide compassionate, knowledgeable support to families. This level of expertise can significantly impact a mother’s breastfeeding journey, fostering better health outcomes for both mothers and infants.

  • First things first: a breast exam is completely voluntary and will never be performed without your consent. Our focus is on helping you have the best breastfeeding experience possible, which means we can still make a care plan to help you and your family if you are uncomfortable with any portion of a breast exam.

The breast exam is designed to identify any physical factors that may impact breastfeeding, such as breast shape, signs of infection, skin integrity, and milk production. This may involve a visual assessment, gentle palpation of the breast tissue, and, if necessary, hand expression of breast milk.

  • An infant oral exam is a gentle assessment of your baby’s mouth, tongue, and sucking reflex to identify any potential issues that could impact breastfeeding. During the exam, Emily will check for signs that may suggest the need for further evaluation, such as tongue or lip tie, and assess other factors that could affect your baby’s latch or feeding ability. While an IBCLC is not certified to diagnose tongue or lip tie, we are extensively trained to recognize indicators that require referral to a professional who can assess, diagnose, and treat these conditions.

The exam is quick, non-invasive, and provides valuable insight into your baby’s feeding habits, helping identify physical barriers that can be addressed to improve breastfeeding success.
